mishaps
For KTM
september 1978: brooklyn, ny
the first time i saw you
was sixteen years back
in the old east flatbush parking lot
where i learned to ride a bike
and drive a car
you wore faded sassons
a thin shirt
a head band
from opposite ends
our eyes join
i draw in your boyish body
and red brown skin
until nearly face to face
thanksgiving 1985:
ocean parkway, brooklyn, ny
across town
memories
cram the air so full
it could hold no more
i hug no one hello
and make them edgy
when the stiffness of my body
forces them to remember as well
home from boston
i call you over in your green car
that chokes and gasps
“come for a ride
to the old neighborhood”
“can’t” i say
“yeah i know
that thing happened to you there
you think i don’t remember?
it’s still my neighborhood”
“no, i’m afraid,” i say
“cause there’s too many blacks”
she says
it was the last time i saw you
rain fell lightly
dripping sliding designs
down the windshield
of your parked car
we were noiseless lightening
holding in heavy gray clouds
so full we exploded
damaged and separate
in the darkened street
january 1993, boston, ma
we were not yet so grown
that we could understand
we were not the enemy
for each other
my innocent body
was hardly
a woman
but we are full now
and i search for you
in the faces
of all my sisters
i want to tell you
it was not
the color of his skin
that jumped me
and beat my body
not the multi-shades
of brown and black
that polluted me
Mishaps is a poem in a book, about surviving and rising above trauma. I’m not sure I will ever publish it. I do share parts from time to time.
To note, I did connect with KTM again for many years. In the early 2000’s, she along with my God daughter became homeless and disappeared. They are still missing, I still look for them.
Forever silly you were.
She had a song, she’d sing it day and night.
Grease I solve my problems and I see the light
We gotta plug and think, we gotta feed it right
There ain’t no danger we can go to far
We start believing now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growing painWhy don’t they understand,
It’s just a crying shame
Their lips are lying only real is real
We start to find right now we got to be what we feel
Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got groove it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got groove it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
This is the life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble laced with confusion
What we doing here?
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got groove it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got groove it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
Grease is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
